FRCEM
The FRCEM comes in 5 sections - all must be passed to be awarded fellowship!! This is not easy and as a consequence the pass rate is low. Follow our tips on How to Pass the exam and use the extensive resources on this site to maximise your chances.
After you have applied, the first part that you have to complete is the CTR. The Critical Appraisal and Clinical SAQ come next followed by the OSCEs and then the Vivas (CTR and Management). Check the Exam Timetable for more info.
Clinical Topic Review (CTR) The candidate will prepare a written dissertation of no more than 3,500 words on a given clinical topic.
Viva on CTR - 15 mins. This takes place at the same time as the management viva.
Critical Appraisal SAQ
Critical Appraisal SAQ paper on a published paper - 90 mins
Clinical SAQ
20 questions - 2hrs 30 mins
OSCES
12 stations lasting 8 mins and 2 stations lasting 17 mins. - 2hrs 30 mins duration
Management Viva - 35 mins
Part 1 - In-tray exercise - you will be given documents simulating a Consultant' "in-tray" of management scenarios.
Part 2 - Long case - you will be given a single clinically related topic for discussion. 15 mins ech part plus 5 mins for reading.
